I began my adventure at Iowa State during the Fall 2013 semester as a freshman double majoring in advertising and apparel merchandising. Right off the bat, I wanted to make sure to take advantage of all the opportunities the school had for me to grow and learn, so I took my time trying out different clubs and organization to see what I was passionate about pursuing.
Before arriving to Iowa State, I was offered the chance to become a George Washington Carver Scholar. The program offers full-tuition scholarships to students of ethnic minority backgrounds who demonstrate high academic standing (3.5/4.0 GPA or higher) and are highly involved within their school and community. The four year program encourages those of diverse backgrounds to pursue their passions while embracing a new cultural awareness.
Once I got to school, I joined the staff of Revival Magazine as a fashion stylist. After a semester with the publication, I went to work for Trend Magazine to try out my skills in a new setting. I ended up loving Trend and have been with the magazine ever since. My second semester, I was promoted from a committee member to Story Styling director and then Fashion Forecasting director the semester after. After working as a director for over a year, I was given the position of Co-Editor-in-Chief and am now in charge of a staff of over 100 students.
I've also taken the time to work while I've been at school as both an athletic academic mentor for the Iowa State Athletics Department and as a Greenlee School Ambassador for the Greenlee School of Journalism and Mass Communication. As an academic mentor, I assist student athletes in tracking their academic success throughout the semester while offering resources and help in their courses. With the Greenlee School, I show prospective students the opportunities offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and explain how each program works within the college.
While on campus, I've also taken on smaller ventures to expand my experiences and discover my interests. During my Spring 2013 semester I joined the Iowa State Daily's style section as a contributing writer. That same semester I took on the roll as a committee member for the Iowa State Fashion Show in the Fashion Week department that worked to create experiential advertising and marketing events for the week before the show. During my Spring 2014 semester I went abroad to Florence, Italy to explore a new culture. Since returning to campus, I've had a little fun, as well, becoming a member of both the run club and ski club.
The university's slogan is to "choose your adventure", and I've worked to fulfill that with my time here at Iowa State.
